Raising Confident Girls: Dealing with Body Esteem Robbers

Did you know that "of all the conditions of which a person may be stigmatized in our culture, including racial or ethnic group membership, religious affiliation, physical handicaps, and sexual preference, the stigma of being overweight may be the most debilitating (Crocker, Cornwell & Major, 1993)? Did you know that overweight women were rated last as desirable marriage partners after embezzlers, cocaine users, shoplifters and blind people (Tiggemann & Rothblum, 1988)? No wonder girls have a fear of gaining weight-- even if it is a natural part of puberty. Girls receive deficit-based messages based on their appearance which have been linked to poor self worth, prro body imafe, poor perceived self competence, and low social support.

Dr. Robyn facilitates and leads a dialogue with parents, educators, and professionals about assisting girls to thrive in a society in which they receive deficit-based messages from media, peers, and sometimes even parents and mentors.

This is a popular seminar for businesses that rely on children and families for their livelihood. Lack of commitment means an inability to run a successful. long-standing business. It creates a feeling of instability and frustration. After school program owners and instructors don't want to be "the bad guy" who feels like they must "force" a family to stay or provide a financial penalty for early cancelation but they also can not ruhn a business without professional contracts. Information on why children quit and strategies for coping with retention issues is a crucial step towards longstanding success. Any governing organization that deals with businesses where retention of children and families is of interest, this seminar would be a great addition to your conference.

For families, children's lack of commitment can be of equal frustration. Parents complain of needing to plead or fight with children about sticking with a sport or after school program. They feel they are between a rock and a hard place. They do not want to have to drag their child into a program kicking and screaming but pulling the child out teaches children it is OK to quit. This kind of practice does not set a good precedent for the way to operate one's life. It is also a financial burden. After all, it is like flushing the money down the toilet if your children walk out before finishing something. This seminar could be a great resource for any organization that wants cater ti the needs of parents who might be struggling with this issue.
